Eelke Kleijn's ten-hour DAYS like NIGHTS event at Thuishaven moved through Melodic House, Deep House and Progressive House from early afternoon until late in the evening.
Before the set, Eelke told me that he was dealing with jet lag. He had returned from his Argentina tour only the evening before.
Then he stepped behind the decks and created a coherent musical story across the full ten hours.
That is an enormous challenge. In a long set, it is easy to lose direction, repeat an idea too often or use all the energy too soon. Eelke kept developing the journey while preserving both his identity and the attention of the crowd.
The final two hours were extraordinary. The atmosphere shifted and it felt as if he had taken us into a completely different world. We danced in a state somewhere between trance and euphoria.
That kind of collective state cannot be forced. It has to be earned through hours of patient storytelling.
To create it after international travel and very little recovery time showed exceptional focus, professionalism and talent. It gave me a new level of respect for both the creative and physical discipline behind a truly great long-form DJ set.
For my own Melodic House journey, the lesson is clear: do not only think about the next transition or the next drop. Know where the entire story is going—and save something meaningful for the moment when the crowd is ready to follow you all the way.
